Jim Prime BA
Director of Music
Jim is an internationally renowned songwriter/musician with 25 years experience of the professional music industry. A founder member of Deacon Blue in 1985, he still tours worldwide with 17 hit singles and 3 number 1 albums. Jim has also been involved with numerous arts festivals and community based projects (Musicians Union, Impact Arts), and organising and performing at the SMART concerts in Ayr. As a ‘New Deal’ industry consultant and a consultant on Music Education in Scotland, the Scottish Executive references his work in the report on Scottish Arts (2002). He acts as only one of four Scottish ‘Fame Academy’ judges in their Music Bursary Awards scheme.
Jim co-wrote the highly successful BA Commercial Music (Hons) course for the University of Paisley in 2000 of which he has recently been appointed Programme Leader. The University's connections are expanding throughout the UK and abroad due to the critical success and popularity of the course.
Jim has previously worked with Counselled Out (e.g. the 'SMART' fundraiser gigs at Ayr Gaiety in 1998) and with Divamusic.biz (e.g. the 2007 Miss Scotland event at Princess Square where he was MD for the 15-piece house band for the event) and recently came on board as as Director of Music for the company.
A new musical stage production, which traces Glasgow's musical traditions from the popular dance band era of the 1940's through to the contemporary scene, is being co-written and produced by Jim and Ken McCracken.
